January 9th, 2006 by Foxopoly TOP !! 2005It’s that time of year again so without further ado: JULIANA HATFIELD “Made In China” She can do no wrong in my book. Crappy guitar sounds, out of key vocals and virtually production free. I love Juliana. COLD “A Different Kind of Pain” Scooter Ward knows every kind of pain. These nu-metal survivors keep putting out great, depressing records. DREDG “Catch Without Arms” What can I say about this album that hasn’t been said already? Sonic and beautiful. DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 “You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine”, “Romance Bloody Romance” Discovered these guys right at the end of 2004 and haven’t stopped listening to their debut and remix album. Who knew that drums and bass could be so HUGE. These guys are the party. NEVERENDING WHITE LIGHTS “Act 1: Goodbye Friends Of the Heavenly Bodies” I know very little about this release except that it’s incredible, it’s Canadian and Matt Talbot makes an appearance. Check out The Grace. TEAM SLEEP “S/T” Even though this album was conceptualized and recorded in 1972 it was well worth the wait. Those expecting sound kin to the Mighty D might be disappointed- way more electronics and experimentation here. Oh yes, and your skull is red. 30 SECONDS TO MARS “A Beautiful Lie” Apparently the mission is over as Commander Leto ditches the space rock for something more ordinary, but that’s okay. Attack is the fight song of the year. THRICE “Vheissu” “We dream of ways to break these iron bars”. I no longer confuse Thrice with Thursday, Story Of the Year and all the other trendy nu-emo bands. BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE “S/T” Canadian collective put out one of the more interesting releases this year. A welcome late addition to the list (Thanks J.) This album plays like best mix tape you ever got. SPOON “Gimme Fiction” Probably the best production value of the year not to mention badass songs. Do yourself a favor and check this one out if you missed it. FIONA APPLE “Extraordinary Machine” The people rose up and demanded Miss Apple’s album be pulled down from the shelf, re-recorded, and put into their desperate hands. Now if only Juliana Hatfield had more fans that dedicated. Honorable Mention: Autolux, Bloc Party, Queens of the Stone Age, Liz Phair, Mastadon, The Like, Armor For Sleep, MIA, Billy Corgan, NIN, Wolf Parade, She Wants Revenge, The New Pornographers, Greg Dulli, Institute, The White Stripes, Roadrunner United, The Life and Times, Eisley, CKY, Dark New Day. Unfortunately there was no Deadsy this year. They would have surely claimed my #1 spot, but who knows if they even exist anymore. The Urantia world is very complex I suppose..or the drugs are VERY powerful. Phantasmagore 6-6-06 perhaps? Expect them to make the list next year along with: 36CF, Some Girls, Ken Andrews, Deftones, Metallica (let us hope), Guns & Roses (ditto), Tool & APC ( I can dream), Snow Patrol, Arcade Fire, Brand New, Tegan & Sara, Raunchy, Muse, Jimmy Eat World, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Smashing Pumpkins???. Yes, 2006 is shaking out to be an incredible year for music. Just imagine a world where every Tuesday is SUPER TUESDAY. |
