Juliana Hatfield made another attempt at mainstream breakthrough (whether she wanted to or not) with her stellar release ‘How To Walk Away’. The album is right up there with “Only Everything” for strongest of her career, with every song being as good as or better than the last. This under-rated, but critically lauded gem ranks up there with the best that came out in 2008. This time JH enlisted the production help of Ivy’s Andy Chase and invited guest musicians to participate including Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws and Psychedelic Furs’ Richard Butler. Standout tracks include the sullen “The Fact Remains”, the sad “My Baby” and the bittersweet “Such A Beautiful Girl”. Released almost concurrently with this album was the Juliana biography “When I Grow Up: A Memoir”, which provides unprecedented incite into the life of this indie darling and former 90’s It Girl. It’s no secret that she’s fought many battles through-out her career (including the shelving of her album “God’s Foot” by Atlantic) and wrestled with her own very personal demons (eating disorders and depression). Her small, but dedicated fan base has always remained strong and supportive. Lately, she’s joined the 21st century and become quite proficient at blogging and was also one of the first to release music online based around an honor system (yes, before NIN and Radiohead made it well-known). With any hope Juliana isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. |
