The Tarantino/Rodriguez tribute to the exploitation films of the seventies, Grindhouse, failed to ignite the box office, but that didn’t mean that it wasn’t a great piece of work. In a day when Beverley Hills Chiuhaha can take the weekend crown at the theater this really doesn’t mean much. The double bill of Planet Terror and Death Proof was a refreshing departure from all the formulaic mess that Hollywood cranks out to earn your $$. If it’s not a remake, it’s a sequel, right? The next big budget (or is it low budget?) mainstream offering in this same vein is “Bitch Slap” coming this spring to a cinema near you. This looks to be another completely un-PC, no holds barred, non-restrained romp through everything modern grindhouse. Sure to be one of the greatest movies of all time….B-movies that is.
